South African film director and writer Oliver Hermanus shows his tattoo inspired by Salvador Dali’s ‘Curtain of Eyes’. I met Oliver at a screenwriting pitching workshop where he shared some of his knowledge with aspiring screenwriters on creating great film. Oliver is one of the directors heading up a new wave of South African cinema that is making international viewers sit up and take notice of South African creative talent.
Oliver’s graduation film, ‘Shirley Adams’, premiered in a competition at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2009. In 2011 his film ‘Skoonheid’ was invited to compete in the Un Certain Regard competition at the 64th Cannes Film Festival. ‘Skoonheid’ won the Queer Palm on May 24th 2011. Oliver’s third feature film, ‘The Endless River’ is currently in post-production with a mid-2015 release date.
