Joel – Everything that was given to us we treasured

When we moved to South Africa, I was thirteen. My first day of school the teacher drew a heart on the blackboard and told us to draw it on a4 paper. It was my first day at school, I wanted to impress everybody and I didn’t want to do the wrong thing. I drew my heart on the very corner of my page. When I finished I looked to my left and to the right, both kids had drawn their hearts using the full page. I felt so embarrassed but she hadn’t told us where or how to draw it.
I came from a very small island in Seychelles. Everything that was given to us we treasured and looked after it, making sure it lasted. We didn’t waste anything because everything was imported.
